Are you interested in reigniting an RSA focus on manufacturing? This online RSA event is an opportunity for you to share your ideas with other Fellows and the Fellowship Council.
Brendan Dunphy FRSA created a topic on the RSA Fellows Forum HERE with the following statement (edited):
"Is manufacturing the forgotten focus of the RSA? All UK political parties have called for a re-birth of UK manufacturing in recent years. Additive Manufacturing, new materials, AI, and other digital technologies are opening possibilities to reinvent and relaunch manufacturing but we Fellows seem strangely silent on the issue, here on the Fellows' Forum and across the RSA. Maybe the RSA and Fellows just don't have an interest?"
The topic generated a lively discussion. Brendan Dunphy and Rod Hyde, Chair of Fellowship Council, agreed to co-host a Zoom session to explore the topic further and explore what we can do to create a renewed focus on manufacturing across the Fellowship.
The conversation will be recorded and summarized and shared via the Forum shortly after the event, including proposed next steps. During the event, please don't say anything you wouldn't want others to hear, including in small-group conversations. By registering for the event and joining on the day, you are agreeing to be recorded.
If you can’t make the session but wish to contribute, please add your ideas to the Fellows’ Forum. Interesting about turn I hope?
Two years ago I submitted to article for the RSA magazine editorial team on the subject of Engineering and its importance to our society in both cultural and financial terms.
I was told in no uncertain terms that the subject lay outside the remit of the Royal Society of Arts - interest was focussed only on social issues.
Yet it is the Royal Society for Arts,Manufactures and Commerce is it not?
Yes it is the Royal Society for the encouragement of the Arts, Manufactures and Commerce. The response you received is disappointing especially when you consider the positive impact of the RSA's premiums (prizes) in the past.
There are two engineers on the Economy, Enterprise and Manufacturing steering group and we are keen to establish how the RSA can make an impact in this area.
I hope you will be able to get to the online event.
