RSA Inequality in Education Network: Dr Lid King on languages in schools

Join the RSA Inequality in Education Network as we host Dr Lid King FRSA giving a talk entitled “Canary in the Mine: Why Languages Can Indicate Inequality in Schools, and What Can Be Done About It”. This will be followed by a discussion and networking opportunities.

Amongst other things, Dr King was the UK government’s languages “tsar” from 2003 to 2011. This discussion will be particularly timely in a period when the Network is assessing the possibilities of a National Education Service.

As Director of CILT, the National Centre for Languages in the UK, Lid King played a major part in expanding its work, spearheading national and European projects, and helping to establish the Languages National Training Organisation to support languages in business. As National Director for Languages for England, King had responsibility for the implementation of the English Languages Strategy. He co-authored the Languages Review and has advised the European Commission, Council of Europe, and national governments. Since 2011 he has continued to support a strategic approach to languages across Europe through The Languages Company. Currently he is working in the Positive Messengers consortium, developing resources to combat online hate speech.
