An afternoon of exploration, looking at what we mean by mental health, and how we describe it.

Starting the day's discussion will be Tina Coldham from INVOLVE who was a mental health service user for 17 years.

Places are limited. If you are a Fellow of the RSA with an interest or expertise in mental health and would like to attend, please contact Leanne Gregory or phone Leanne on 07525 310 457. Please let us know by 30 April at the latest!

Mental health disorders are amongst the leading causes of ill health and disability worldwide but services for people with mental health problems are often limited and treatment is not always successful.

NHS Research & Development North West have been working in collaboration with the Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce (RSA), the University of Chester and Lapeenranta University of Technology, Finland, to explore the use of Arts-Based Methods in mental health research. Arts-based research is more about beginning an investigation without expectations and remaining open to all possibilities.

Before asking how we can help, heal or support people with mental health problems we thought we would invite a wide range of people to spend an afternoon having a conversation to re-consider what we mean by mental health.

This event will gather together people from diverse backgrounds across the North of England all of whom will have an interest or expertise in mental health. The event provides invitees with the opportunity to look at different ways of approaching collaborative working across organisations, with a view to developing innovative ideas and developing new arts-based research projects.

The event is part of a programme of Catalyst Events being organised by NHS R&D North West to bring together key stakeholders in health-related research.

We sincerely hope you are able to attend as your views and input are essential in ensuring the development of an arts-based approach to mental health research.

Travel bursaries will be available upon request, please contact Leanne.
