How to grow a creative: the importance of creative education to UK creative industries - views from industry, higher education and schools

Creative education has been getting a bad press in the past few years, especially in the light of an increased focus on metric-based accountability in schools. Similarly, a proposal in the leaked Auger report that university creative courses should have their fees cut regardless of the cost of course delivery is being made in response to the belief that creative arts students will never earn enough money to pay back their student loans. The overall story seems to be one of devaluing creative subjects at all levels of education.

We believe this topic deserves further discussion, and that the UK creative industries have a significant impact on the economic and cultural life of the nation. We hope to examine this topic through the lens of our ongoing conversations on careers, aspirations and Island children.

We have three speakers to move our discussion forward:

Our first speaker is Jonathan Peel, RSA IOW co-convener, and Chairman of Millimage, Producer of Animation Series and Specials for Television and Feature Films. Jonathan was Vice-Chair of PACT between 2003 and 2006, and Chairman of the Children and Animation Working Group (PACT is the trade association representing the commercial interests of UK independent television, film, digital, children’s and animation media companies).

Our second speaker is Paul Inman (FRSA), Pro Vice Chancellor at Oxford Brookes University, and Dean of the Faculty of Technology, Design and Environment. Paul has served as a member of the university’s senior management team since 2011 and leads on international student recruitment. Paul also leads a faculty of sector-leading teaching, research and knowledge exchange in Fine Art, Film and Digital Media, Music, Publishing, Computing, Mechanical Engineering, Architecture and the Built Environment. Under his leadership the faculty is now the academic unit delivering the majority of the university’s research grant income, and every school within the faculty has world-leading teaching (QS World University Rankings 2018).

Our third speaker is to be confirmed but will hopefully talk on the topic of primary education and the pressures of delivering creative subjects in the school setting (see the excellent framing report, PRIMARY COLOURS (Ben Cooper, Fabian Society, 2019).
