How can cities be re-imagined in the 21st Century? Open Streets aims to improve quality of life and bring citizens together by temporarily opening streets to people and closing them to cars.
Edinburgh is the first city in the UK to join Open Streets, testing a local network of people-friendly routes around the Old Town. The focus is on inclusion, culture and the local economy. It provides an opportunity, not just to open up the streets to non-vehicular traffic but to promote a non-commercial model that encourages creativity and physical activity. The objectives chime with the RSA’s core themes of citizenship, place-shaping and deliberative democracy.
The event will include a talk and short tour, followed by a session for Fellows and RSA supporters to discuss the proposals in roundtable format.
