Join us for the third Woking RSA Fellows meeting where we’ll continue to explore the development of local Fellows projects and hear from a member of the RSA Fellowships team about their work and initiatives being taken forward in other parts of the country.

At the last meeting, discussions covered the following:

1. Amplifying the citizen’s voice.
We noted the Council received only around 90 submissions in its consultation on the town’s redevelopment and it was suggested that more input than that could have been achieved by carrying out a survey at the gates of a school over a couple of days. This gave rise to the idea that collectively, we could channel a much larger number of voices in the town.

2. Loneliness and social infrastructure
Concern was raised around how people moving into the area would thrive. There are a few initiatives in place which might help as Woking grows – how can we build on these?

 3. Woking's identity
It was felt the message of the Council's #WeAreWoking campaign wasn’t clear. The diversity of the people in Woking is something to be celebrated so the suggestion was that we look into an #IamWoking campaign which showcases this.

Another question posed was 'what does Woking want to be famous for'? Could we, for example, come up with an activity which would get it into the Guinness Book of Records?

4. Woking Park
This is an underutilised resource, particularly for community-building events, but no specific ideas were put forward.

5. Getting more traction
We discussed ways in which we could build support for our projects once they’re underway

6. There was a suggestion that we could, between us, organise and facilitate a Citizen’s Assembly on Brexit. (see the RSA blog by Matthew Taylor and Riley Thorold on ‘How would a Citizen’s Assembly on Brexit work?’)

7. There is interest in setting up a Repair Cafe in Woking

If you have any access requirements or require any reasonable adjustments, please let the team know: networks@rsa.org.uk. Please also let us know if you have any dietary requirements or severe allergies.

Location: The Lightbox, Chobham Road, Woking, GU21 4AA
