In the 50th anniversary year of the Skeffington Report, this joint seminar, with the RSA, A&DS and the RTPI, will explore the opportunities and challenges of new forms of community engagement emerging in planning and urban design.

Dr Oliver Escobar (University of Edinburgh) will present his recent research on ‘democratic innovations to counter the democratic recession’, drawing on examples from Europe and North America.

With the introduction of Local Place Plans in the Planning (Scotland) Act 2019, Julia Frost (PAS and RTPI Convenor) will discuss the recent experiences of charrettes for facilitating local place planning. Irene Beautyman (Improvement Service) will explore how the skill gap for planners and elected members can be overcome to ensure effective engagement with communities.”
