This month, RSA Durham are joined in conversation with guest Fellows Stéphane Goldstein and Jane Secker. Join us as we explore with Stéphane and Jane, the relationship we have with ‘information’ as citizens, as learners, as consumers. Faced with a relentless deluge of information and data, much of it of dubious provenance, how well equipped are we to sift through it, be discerning about it, think critically about it, as well as to share it, use it ethically and create it?

Information literacy, digital literacy, data literacy, media literacy, news literacy and critical literacy are all closely aligned concepts that can help us to address such questions, which are of fundamental societal importance.

This event will be an opportunity to discuss with Stéphane and Jane why these literacies matter, and what can be done. We will consider how public policy and practice is starting to address these challenges, particularly in the UK, and reflect on whether policy-makers are up to the task.

We will also consider: whether and how the competencies and know-how associated with these literacies can be taught; how they fit or do not fit in the school curriculum; and the role of librarians and information professionals.
