The RSA Tees Valley Network and Barnard Castle School invite you to join a celebration as we launch a Sixth Form Democracy Enlightenment in Education programme.

The future of democracy is in the hands of the next generation, and we wish to do all we can to encourage confidence, participation and innovation - full democratic agency for young people. Find out more about the project below.

From 5pm we will hear specially rehearsed music from the school’s Chamber Choir. We’ll offer more information on the future plans for the democracy project - short speeches, and enough time for real questions and debate. RSA Fellows will then introduce some of the exciting local projects they have launched. There will be ample refreshments, and the opportunity for some really worthwhile, convivial networking.

If you have any access requirements or require any reasonable adjustments, please let the team know: networks@rsa.org.uk. Please also let us know if you have any dietary requirements or severe allergies.

Follow the “Book Now” link above to register for a free ticket for the event.

Last year we asked what our RSA Tees Valley future might look like. The democracy project is one positive, practical consequence, with the RSA and its Fellows joining with local educators to do the best we can for our young people - all sectors aiming to enhance future opportunity for the young and expanding the routes to democracy by coming together. We urge anybody who is interested to come along, have your say and enjoy the evening.

We also invite interested Fellows to join the team during the morning of the 15th at the school, to work with mixed groups of sixth form students. They will respond to the challenges in democracy set down by our distinguished speakers, including Matthew Taylor. If you wish to join as a mentor on 15th October and/or continue to support our young people in the future, please contact Paul Ingram as soon as possible: paul@ingrampix.com. We have a ‘training evening’ available in person or online that you’ll be expected to attend on 30th September.

Sixth Form Democracy Enlightenment in Education programme
Earlier in the day, RSA Fellows leading this project are coming together with teachers and students from across the North East for a day of democracy enlightenment. Lower sixth form students from five state schools and five independent schools in the North East will be working together to produce their manifesto for a 21st Century Democracy. Afterwards, students will return to their schools to work with their teacher and an RSA Fellow Mentor to develop a plan, reflect on the day, share learning and improve school democracy. Each school will also select two student representatives to attend the Tees Valley Sixth Form Democracy Council in March 2020 where they will present their plan. Pupils on the Council will vote for the best plan, and the winning school will go forward to present their plan at the RSA in London in June 2020.
