This topic is one of the most contentious, controversial and somehow immovable in the art world. Whilst TV shows billionaires investing massively in a few hand-picked artworks, most living working artists are not even earning minimum wage from their art production. If, as a fine artist you were earning minimum wage from your art, £20.5k per annum (6 days per week, 8 hours per day), this would indicate you were a seriously successful artist.
Dee Degard FRSA, RCA and artist will be hosting this fascinating talk with Professor Paul Bhangal, a Professor of Entrepreneurship who collaborates on art initiatives between China and the UK and owner of Bloomsbury Gallery, artist at Flowers East and tutor at the RCA Esther Teichmann, Turner Prize nominee artist Mark Titchner and art consultant at Victoria Miro Ruby del Winter for Rawthmells, The RSA's 21st century enlightenment coffeehouse.
The Art with… series explores the crossover between the arts and other disciplines. In this talk the ‘artist’ we are discussing is a fine artist who is working full time at their practice. Even this definition is open for discussion!
In a ‘Parkinson’ style conversation this wonderful panel will discuss art with money; whether the clumsy monetary discrepancies between artists and purchasing collectors/collections can be or even should be changed. Are market forces inevitable in the art market? Collectors like what they like and buy the works. People like investments to succeed. Is all art an investment?
Why are there so many artists who cannot make a living from their work? Would the government intervene in this intolerable situation for artists to create a more cultured, vibrant society?
And finally, if you fancy something to eat before or after the event, or a drink to enjoy whilst you listen, Rawthmells coffeehouse (in RSA House) is open from 8:30am to 9pm and serves coffee, cocktails and food all day, with profits supporting The RSA’s social change programmes.
