Come watch some of the talks and animated features on the RSA’s YouTube channel on creativity, craft, and making, designed to stimulate debate about how we can help to advance the march of the makers in Surrey and beyond.
How can we help to advance the march of the makers in Surrey and beyond?
Designers, artists, craftspeople, and makers of beautiful and useful things tend to do their own thing and can be primarily inspired by their own urges to create and make. Their starting point is not how they can be entrepreneurs or contributors to the local economy, but we could argue that they are vitally important to the strength and vitality of the economic life of the local area and the wider region. By acquiring raw materials, purchasing tools and services, and selling their products, they make money go round in the local economy.
Overlook the power and energy of the smaller producer and our understanding of the economic profile of the region is incredibly lop-sided.
We aim to stimulate an evening of fascinating and important debate about how we can help to advance the march of the makers in Surrey and beyond. Who are the makers in our area? How many people are making a living out of design, art, and craft? How many Fellows work (or play) in the creative artistic and craft sectors and how can we encourage them and help more people develop their talents and join the movement?
We will watch some of the talks and animated features on the RSA’s YouTube Channel on creativity, craft, and making as a means of informing and stimulating debate amongst ourselves. Come at 7pm for light snacks and refreshments and we will start at 7.30pm by showing approximately an hour of videos on a big screen. This will be followed by an hour of discussion amongst ourselves about how we can encourage this aspect of our lives, not only for its own sake but with an eye on the wider benefits for all of us.
This will, we hope, be the first in a series of RSA Watch evenings in Surrey during 2017.
