Fellows and others who are members of the Sustainable Households subgroup of the RSA Sustainability Network are running an interactive event on 4 July to share ideas for householders to reduce their food and clothing waste.

The group is interested in sharing ideas that support UK householders to reduce their consumption of energy, water and food, and to minimise waste, thus lowering their carbon footprint and contributing to a more sustainable planet.

UK households waste 7.3 million tons of food every year at a cost of £12bn. WRAP estimates say that between 60% and 78% of this waste is avoidable.  Anna Pitt, a writer on food waste, will lead a discussion on how households can significantly reduce such waste and how best to deal with unavoidable waste. Fashion is sometimes described as the second most polluting industry in the world after oil.  Nicola Mansfield, whose academic work focuses on sustainable fashion, will talk about ways to manage and dispose of clothing to minimise the environmental impact.

You can find out more about the Sustainable Households subgroup and its activities. Anybody with an interest in reducing their household’s carbon footprint can engage with the project by completing this form.

The 4th July event is open to those interested in living more sustainably at home by reducing food and clothing waste.
