How do some things get defined as crime and others not? In an age of insecurities including financial crises and global warming, this question becomes vitally important. This May, join RSA Durham for a talk led by Professor Tanya Wyatt as we explore this question and challenge our conventional notion of crime.

Actions that harm large numbers of people seemingly go unpunished and even unquestioned. The process of the social construction of crime is complex and one that demands further inquiry, and at the core is who is doing the defining. Power is an integral component to how and why crime is defined in the way that it is.

In this talk, Tanya explores how crimes of the powerful are made invisible through control of the legislative and enforcement processes. Drawing on contemporary case studies, she will also explore the motivations of the powerful for their criminal behaviour, and the techniques they use to manipulate the system.

This talk will be followed by Q&A and drinks.
