learn by doing

The project's long-term social impact is the creation of new businesses and self-sustaining business people. WWTL employs the hard to reach, providing a supportive environment to ‘learn by doing.’ They also provide support in bookkeeping, marketing, insurance, stock management, health & safety, and coach employees to develop their own business plan, which in turn develops employability skills, confidence and resilience. 

The success of these interventions is measured via an Employability Map, which tracks personal soft skills growth. Success is also measured by how many employees graduate to be self-employed coffee franchise owners and how many progress into employment, education or training.


The Team

We Walk the Line was founded by two Fellows of the RSA, Mat Corbett and Kieron Tilley.

Mat Corbett has over 15 years’ experience in the fields of training, social exclusion, enterprise and employment with a focus of supporting those most disadvantaged in the labour market. He has led an international human rights education charity, worked in senior positions within London’s largest Housing Association in community regeneration, and established a market leading enterprise, employment and skills directorate at a London college.

Kieron Tilley has also worked with hard to reach groups for 15 years across the commercial, public and third sectors. Most recently he has been a key member of the team which founded and developed a multi-award winning and ground breaking education charity working in the criminal justice, education and broadcast sectors.

Prior to this, he worked for the BBC for several years, firstly for BBC People where he piloted award-winning staff development programmes and latterly at BBC Network Radio where he was responsible for strategic learning content and outreach activity. 



We Walk the Line plans to scale up and replicate the project via a hybrid franchise model, where each of the graduates become members of a social enterprise franchise, with a percentage of their sales supporting the growth of the We Walk the Line family.

The vision is to open a barista training cafe in major cities across the UK where you can buy a coffee with a conscience on your daily commute, safe in the knowledge that like the Big Issue, your purchase is going to change that baristas life for good.

The project also aims to roll out the supported route to employment model to other 'maker' trades - a microbrewery, a fruit & veg stall and even a roastery so we can roast our own Wake Up! coffee bean. All enterprises will be 'more than profit', employing the excluded and supporting them to self-employment as part of the We Walk the Line family.
