INTRO - Guide to the terrain

PART 1 - Before the pandemic

PART 2 - Transitional space

PART 3 - The emerging future

PART 4 - Your reality

We set out to see how the pandemic has impacted upon different communities and individuals, to hear their stories of change.

We wanted to relate this to the pre-existing conditions to see what, if any, relationship there was with the impact of the pandemic.

We thought that a range of strong foundations would be a characteristic of more resilient communities and that those most impacted by austerity and with fewer foundations would be hardest hit. We wanted to explore our insight that the period since the crisis hit has placed us all in an extended liminal space – that doesn’t look like what was before, nor what might be coming.

We asked:

  • What did communities do in response to Covid-19?
  • Which factors helped or hindered this response?
  • How are people navigating the uncertainty of transition?

Our investigation of the issues affecting communities during the pandemic is captured in the themes below. We invite you to explore these and add your reflections in the comments section.

Navigating the transitional space

  • Different crises

Where do you see compounding crises and how are these playing out in different communities?

  • Deep fault-lines

Where and how has the pandemic exacerbated existing issues?

  • Magic money forest

Is it a concern that so much funding has been found by government - yet universal credit has only been temporarily uplifted by £20 and it took a sustained campaign to extend free school meals?

  • Temporary solutions

Are there any specific temporary measures you’ve seen put in place that would cause you concern if they became the norm?

  • Fog of ambiguity

How are you finding resilience through transition to cope with discomfort and uncertainty?

  • Streams of energy

Where are you seeing energy for change emerge? How can you add to it?
