Elizabeth Buie FRSA will present aspects of her almost-complete PhD research programme on “Transcendent User Experience”.
Transcendent experiences are tricky to define, but for the purpose of this work she defines them as “artefact-facilitated experiences of connection with something greater than oneself.” As they are impossible to arrange or anticipate, and therefore unsuitable for straightforward “classic” methods for research and design, her research focussed on what such experiences are, subjectively; it explored how artefacts support them and how design can contribute to enhancing that support.
Elizbeth will discuss the interviews she conducted and describe the “Transcendhance” workshops that she delivered in an atmosphere of fun and play to elicit design ideas. “Design fiction” as a research technique, especially appropriate for experiences that cannot be arranged or anticipated, will also be introduced.
Her conclusion presents “peripheral design” as a promising strategy for facilitating design to enhance transcendent experience.
Everyone is welcome and these events are free to attend. Please RSVP to Bill Gibbon FRSA: bill@billgibbon.net.
Location: Presentation Theatre (ground floor), Northumbria University's School of Design, City Campus East, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE1 8ST.
