Life After Incarceration: The Plight of Building a Career

Fellowship Event

 -

New York City

Talk of the injustice of the criminal justice system is at an all-time high. But how much do we know about what happens once incarcerated individuals are released?

This salon will serve as an open conversation about the challenges of life after incarceration, specifically as it relates to the obstacles preventing returning citizens from building a career. The discussion will center returning citizens as the featured speakers and in the crowd, and will focus on creating a better understanding around the challenges they've faced in building a career since their experience in prison. Organizations in attendance will be encouraged to reflect on shifts they can make to respond to the guidance of the speakers and the career ambitions of the returning citizens in the crowd, and to come prepared to offer connections or career opportunities to meet the needs that are voiced by the featured speakers.

This salon features Julio Medina, the founder and CEO of Exodus Transitional CommunityDominic Dupont, star of the documentary Raised in the SystemCoss Marte, CEO and Founder of Conbody, who after serving a 10-year prison sentence started his own fitness company, and Ashish Prashar, FRSA, who served time in London and then had a lengthy career in both UK and US politics, serving as the press secretary to the Mayor of London.

This event will be hosted at an art gallery called Howl! Happening: An Arturo Vega Project during their Guy Woodard: We the People exhibition meant to foster a contemporary dialogue around mass incarceration. After the event, RSA Fellows and attendees will be invited to a meet-up over drinks nearby the gallery.

Both RSA Fellows and non-RSA Fellows are invited to attend this event. Please RSVP ahead of time to attend this event and receive arrival information.
