RSA Fellow Bryn Llewellyn FRSA founded Tagtiv8 as an innovative way for children to learn core subjects, while being active.
One month on from Helsinki Education Week and the HundrED Summit and those who attended are still buzzing! Why? It’s all about people - connecting ideas and innovations. It’s sometimes hard to explain the HundrED ethos and community, but it has been summed up brilliantly in this Forbes Magazine article.
Richard Shackleton, Deputy Head of Mission at the British Embassy in Helsinki extolled the fact that this year’s HundrED Collection featured 10 innovations from the UK, one of which is Tagtiv8.
So what is Tagtiv8? Think Tig/Tag meets Scrabble! Or Tag Rugby/Flag Football meets Maths.
It’s all about Physically Active Learning (PAL). Research by Leeds Beckett University demonstrates that Tagtiv8 tackle inactivity & obesity levels - as well as impacting positively on standards and academic performance. Tagtiv8 are now working with over 70,000 children and teachers across the UK and abroad. Pioneering teachers respect the pedagogy and children love the games.
Tagtiv8 was founded in 2012 by RSA Fellow, Bryn Llewellyn. Bryn worked in various UK schools for 25 years as a teacher and school leader. Over time, he was becoming increasingly frustrated that many primary schools were focussing only on English and Mathematics, with certain subjects - including PE and the arts - put to one side. Subjects were being taught in boxes and Bryn’s experiences show this is not how we learn best. Tagtiv8’s pioneering approaches provide an enjoyable alternative to classroom based learning and also promotes physical activity – crucial when we all face the increasing problem of sedentary lifestyles.
