Fellow-led project The Solar Challenge, a competition for all ages to build and fly a solar powered model plane, has been sponsored by Engineering UK to attend the Big Bang Fair.

Taking place at the NEC, Birmingham from 16 - 19 March 2016 the Fair - the largest of its type in Europe - gives young people aged 9 to 18 the chance to hear from inspiring engineers and scientists from some of the UK’s biggest companies. With 100,000 visitors attending they will find out what is happening in science and about the opportunities available in research and engineering.

This Solar Challenge will help these students to develop teamwork and the practical and employability skills needed in the workplace. Whether they are into design, knowing how things work or finding ways to improve them, if they are practically minded or hands on, or they have a passion for business or policy making, the Solar Challenge will help them focus and develop those skills. There is also the added goal of setting a world record for model solar flight that adds an exciting element to an initiative that could help to inspire prospective engineers.

The Big Bang Fair is an exceptional educational event for the STEM subjects and the ideal platform for the Solar Challenge to showcase.

The organising committee needs you to help promote this unique challenge to schools and colleges throughout the UK. For more information contact [email protected]  also visit us on stand 507 at the Big Bang Fair.

Location: The National Exhibition Centre (NEC), Birmingham, West Midlands, B40 1NT
