On Monday 9th March, the William Shipley Group are visiting the V&A Prints Department to explore their lithography collection, including work by artists who were Fellows of the RSA.
The RSA encouraged the art of lithography from the award of a Gold Medal to its inventor Aloys Senefelder (1771-1834) in 1819 to presenting a lithograph by William Mulready to subscribers to the Society’s campaign for a National Gallery of British Art in 1848 to organising a comprehensive exhibition of lithography held at the V&A to mark Senefelder’s centenary. Although lithography’s popularity with artists has waned over the years it was rediscovered by Picasso, Miro, Escher, David Hockney and others in the 20th century.
Zorian Clayton will discuss this method of printmaking and show examples of lithographs in the V&A’s collection, including work by Senefelder, Owen Jones, Joseph Pennell as well as work by some of the RSA’s Royal Designers for Industry – Enid Marx and Edward Bawden.
