Are leaders born or made? Where does ambition come from? How does adversity affect the growth of leadership? Does the leader make the times or do the times make the leader?
Doris Kearns Goodwin is America’s pre-eminent presidential historian. “Leadership in Turbulent Times” is the culmination of her five-decade career: an illuminating exploration of the development, growth and exercise of leadership as exemplified by Abraham Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Lyndon B. Johnson.
Although set apart in background, abilities, and temperament, these men shared a fierce ambition and a deep-seated resilience that enabled them to surmount uncommon hardships. At their best, all four were guided by a sense of moral purpose. At moments of great challenge, they were able to summon their talents to enlarge the opportunities and lives of others.
In today’s polarized world, these stories of authentic leadership in times of apprehension and fracture take on a singular urgency, offering essential lessons for aspiring and established leaders from every field.
In an unmissable event at the RSA, Doris Kearns Goodwin will be joined in conversation by multi-award-winning Channel 4 News anchor Jon Snow.
To celebrate the opening of the RSA’s new coffeehouse, Rawthmells, we’re bringing together a series of powerful conversations and sharing the best ideas on some of the challenges we face as a society in the next decade and beyond.
