To protect the future of life on earth, we need to do more than just reimagine the economy – we have to change everything.
Conversations about protecting the planet have tended to focus on measures that tinker around the edges of the status quo. This isn’t enough: for humanity to survive on an inhabitable planet, we need radical systemic change, overhauling our economy and entirely rethinking what our resources are ultimately for. Finance, the economy, and the ecosystem are all tightly bound together, so restoration of the climate cannot happen without transformation across every sector.
To achieve this transformation, we need more than a vision: we need a plan. Economists Ann Pettifor and Grace Blakeley discuss the radical and comprehensive proposals laid out in the Green New Deal, and make a case for a total reimagining of how our power and resources are distributed, what counts as a public good, and how to ensure our institutions work for the interests of society and the planet.
