RSA Bath: Preparing for a creative future
In conversation with Penny Hay, Kerry Chappell will introduce the Penryn Creativity Collaborative, a major partnership between schools, researchers and local industries which has raised the status of creativity in schools in Cornwall.
Within the Creativity Collaboratives Project Phase 1 (2021-24), the Penryn Creativity Collaborative has helped to prepare young people creatively for their future in a changing workforce. Teachers have changed their curricula and classroom practice, helping them feel more energized, with every participating school reporting changes to their curriculum. In turn, this has encouraged students to broaden their thinking by considering different perspectives or by using multi-disciplinary approaches. All those participating in the research said the project had helped them develop greater understanding of their creative skills and their importance in industry. Analysis also shows that the project has changed creative school cultures, encouraged openness and raised the status of creativity in schools.
As the lead for the University of Exeter research team, Kerry will share findings about the impact of the project from the Phase 1 final report, as well as examples from the PCC Toolkit. She will also offer insights into plans for Phase 2 (2024-26), including a Train the Trainer Action Research programme with accompanying free website resource, funded by ACE and the ESRC.
Penryn Creativity Collaborative (2021-2026) has been funded by Arts Council England, with support from the Freelands Foundation and the ESRC. The project is led by Sarah Childs, Assistant Headteacher at Penryn College, with the research study and action research led and facilitated by Associate Professor Kerry Chappell and Ursula Crickmay. At UoE, within the School of Education, Kerry co-leads the Centre for Research in Transdisciplinary Education and leads the MA Creative Arts in Education Programme.
The next RSA Bath “In Conversation With…” event will be at 6pm online on Tuesday 29th April with Polly Crockett.
