National Gallery Curator Talk: José María Velasco: A View of Mexico
We are pleased to announce that curator Daniel Sobrino Ralston will join us for a talk on José María Velasco: A View of Mexico. This is the first-ever exhibition that the National Gallery has dedicated to a historical Latin American artist.
José María Velasco (1840–1912), is one of Mexico’s most celebrated 19th-century painter, famed for his monumental paintings of the Valley of Mexico. Painted during decades of tremendous social change, his works depict Mexico’s magnificent scenery during a time of rapid industrialisation. There is no painting by Velasco in a UK public collection and the last large-scale exhibition devoted to him outside Mexico was held almost 50 years ago.
Please join us for this interesting talk by one of the exhibition’s curators, for a chance to find out more about some of Velasco’s magnificent paintings and drawings being displayed in the National Gallery this year.
The talk will last around 45 minutes and there will be time for questions at the end.
