This RSA Salisbury Meetup focuses on Our Wilton: developing new opportunities for service veterans.
Our Wilton is the UK’s first housing development to create homes and training, support and enterprise opportunities for service veterans. This meeting will be an opportunity to hear about one of the most innovative social projects in our area, which has been supported by George Brutton one of our local fellows.
The project is transforming the former Erskine Barracks in Wilton into a purpose-built community-based campus for service veterans with homes and flats, an innovative enterprise hub, community café, and nursery. It managed by Our Wilton, a community interest company and charity. Veterans will rent for a period of between six and 24 months while they receive business and skills training to launch their own businesses. Redrow Homes are partnering with Our Enterprise on the project and are building 292 private homes on other parts of the site.
Sue has been the Operations Manager on the Our Wilton project since its earliest stages and is responsible for liaising with contractors, veterans and the public; developing relationships with prospective partners; and ensuring that the project is fully integrated into the community. She previously worked for the civil service in Wiltshire for nine years as a senior community development worker, working alongside army personnel and their families.
The scheme at the former Erskine Barracks was highly commended in the category for Planning for Housing Growth at the national Planning & Placemaking Awards. The annual awards recognise projects which are improving local areas.
