The RSA Fellowship in Oxford invite you to join us for a special networking event in partnership with Oxford Festival of the Arts on Wednesday, May 15th at Magdalen College Old Library, High Street Oxford OX1 4AU. ‘Drowned books’ and ‘ghost books’: making sense of the extraordinary finds from seventeenth-century shipwreck off the Dutch island of Texel with Dr Janet Dickinson.
The discovery of shipwreck BZN17 off the Dutch Texel islands attracted worldwide attention due to the astonishing degree of preservation of a series of objects brought up from the wreck. Dr Janet Dickinson will focus on a number of book covers that survived, asking what they can reveal of their owners and of their own histories as objects of value.
The event will be introduced by Dr Michelle Castelletti, Fellow of the RSA and Director of Oxford Festival of the Arts. There will be drinks and networking in the adjoining room to the library after the lecture, after which there will be an opportunity to see and discuss related artefacts together with the College librarian, Daryl Green.
The Old Library is the original college library and has been housed in the same space in the Cloisters since the late fifteenth-century. Today it holds a large collection of books published before 1800 and several hundred manuscripts. This is a rare opportunity to visit this library for non-members of the College.
This event is a collaboration between Oxford Festival of the Arts, the Department of Continuing Education, University of Oxford and Magdalen College Old Library.
