What’s the outlook for humanity?

Through its diverse populationLeicester is especially concerned about the looming environmental tragedies throughout the world.

You are cordially invited to take part in an evening of informed presentations and lively discussion about both the threats and the opportunities brought about by climate change.

The principal speaker will be the award-winning journalist, academic and change strategist, Dr Nafeez Ahmed.

Dr Ahmed reports on global system transformation for VICE MEDIA, is editor of the crowdfunded investigative journalism project, Insurge Intelligence, and is a former Guardian environment blogger. He is a Research Fellow at the Schumacher Institute, and former Visiting Research Fellow at Anglia Ruskin University’s Faculty of Science and Technology, which supported the development of his latest book, Failing States, Collapsing Systems: BioPhysical Triggers of Political Violence. His work investigates the interconnections of global crises across climate, energy, food, money, terror and the police-state. He advises and builds organisations and networks to transform the systems that incubate these crises.

The evening will begin with a presentation from Dr Ahmed on what he calls the great ‘phase shift’ to post-carbon civilisation, outlining a systems framework for understanding the risks of collapse, and the opportunities of regeneration and renewal, and strategies to pursue system change.

This will be followed by a short Q&A session.

We will then move on to an extended conversation, providing opportunities for lively exchanges and short pre-arranged presentations related to the topic.

We will close with a discussion about how to build on the evening.

Light refreshments will be provided.

Please book your place above. This event is free to attend and open to Fellows, friends, and colleagues interested in supporting the work of the RSA.
