Can algorithms, artificial intelligence and machines be truly creative? Is human creativity necessary for scientific progress? Join Marcus de Sautoy OBE FRS, Simonyi Chair for the Public Understanding of Science, and Tom McLeish FRS, Chair for Natural Philosophy at York University, in a conversation facilitated by artist Degard FRSA for Rawthmells, the RSA's 21st century enlightenment coffeehouse.

'ART with…' is a mini-series of talks curated by artist Degard FRSA from the Royal College of Art for Rawthmells Coffeehouse at the RSA. The series explores the crossover between the arts and other disciplines.

In this, the third event in the series, Marcus de Sautoy, author of The Creativity Code, and Tom McLeish, author of The Poetry and Music of Science: Comparing Creativity in Science and Art, will be exploring the blurred lines between science and creativity. The conversation will attempt to uncover how we can embrace the power of AI, algorithms and machine learning, whilst retaining the ‘Eureka!’ moments that have defined human creativity and propelled scientific advancement on the long march of human progress.

In a ‘Parkinson style’ conversation with Degard FRSA, the speakers will discuss the value of art and creativity in scientific breakthroughs, the science behind those ‘Eureka!’ moments, the value of man-made versus machine-made art and the need for human creativity to colour science in an educational setting.

If you fancy something to eat before or after the event, or a drink to enjoy whilst you listen, Rawthmells Coffeehouse (in RSA House) is open from 8:30am to 9pm and serves coffee, cocktails and food all day, with profits supporting the RSA’s social change programmes.

Location: Rawthmells, RSA House, 8 John Adam Street, London, WC2N 6EZ
