Inspired by the RSA’s origin in an enlightenment coffeehouse over 260 years ago, our new Northern Coffeehouse series offers an interactive space to share ideas for social change.

We’re joined by Lee David Evans of the Mile End Institute, who has been undertaking research into post-war Conservative Party history. A particular topic he’s working on at the moment is the 1963 Conservative leadership selection, when Harold Macmillan resigned and the Earl of Home took his place. This autumn marks 60 years since those dramatic events.

The topic has some specific interest for the North of England - many of the most fevered moments around the leadership selection took place in Blackpool, where that year's Conservative Party conference was being held. More importantly, it was the trailblazer of change in post-war politics, reforming how the major parties worked, the role of party members, and the relationship between the parties and the Crown.

Please join us for what promises to be a fascinating run-through of political history with a peculiarly Northern background.

Join us most Fridays for an informal lunchtime talk followed by a chance to discuss the topic of the day or anything else that is on your mind, in small breakout rooms. Starting at 1pm and finished by 1.45pm, you can enjoy your Friday lunch break with inspiring speakers and interesting colleagues.
