Inspired by the RSA’s origin in an enlightenment coffeehouse over 260 years ago, our new Northern Coffeehouse series offers an interactive space to share ideas for social change.

We’re joined by Catherine Cole (Professor of Creative Writing, Liverpool John Moores University), an Australian-British writer who currently lives in Liverpool.

Catherine’s latest book Slipstream is a poignant memoir that follows the Cole family's journey as "Ten Pound Poms" in Australia. Catherine, their first Australian-born child, navigates the contrasting worlds of her parents' small mining village in northern England and a childhood of hot Australian summers, beaches and cicadas. Through personal stories, cultural observations and historical insights, Slipstream offers an exploration of the sacrifices made by migrants to build a better future for their children in a new land.

Join us most Fridays for an informal lunchtime talk followed by a chance to discuss the topic of the day or anything else that is on your mind, in small breakout rooms. Starting at 1pm and finished by 1.45pm, you can enjoy your Friday lunch break with inspiring speakers and interesting colleagues.
