The pursuit of growth continues to define economic life around the world. Yet the prosperity gains of the last two centuries have come at an enormous price: deepening inequalities, destabilising technologies, environmental destruction and climate change.
Daniel Susskind is an award-winning economist, research professor in economics at King’s College London and senior research associate at the Institute for Ethics in AI at Oxford University. At the RSA, he joined CEO and former chief economist at the Bank of England Andy Haldane to explore the ‘growth dilemma’ at a time of huge uncertainty about its very value, and as sluggish productivity and stagnation haunt not only the UK, but also Europe, China, and many other countries around the world.
In his new book Growth: A Reckoning, Susskind looks afresh at the evidence to argue that we cannot abandon growth; we must instead redirect it to make it better reflect what we truly value.
