Join us for a conversation with mixed-media Artist Curator Jean Joseph and friends for a deep dive into her narrative-based process.
Jean (Artmaroon) will be in the company of co-fellow Debbie Golt of Outerglobe, Radio Broadcaster and DJ, and Gaynor Tutani, Curator and producer.
From their broad arts perspective and mutual relationship, they will discuss Jean’s key themes and vision; for example, her responses to conflicting human and natural environments, and the influence of legacies and geographic locations. They will also be discussing ‘Walking Through Time’ – currently displayed in the RSA Connection Exhibition. The event will include a live poetry reading from Wil Joseph-Loewenthal.
This conversation will take place in the Steps, Level -2 at RSA House. Jean Joseph’s work was shown in the RSA’s Connection Group Show, which will be on view 14-16 September.
Jean Joseph is Dominica-born, and based in London. Her range of media is an interplay of dimension and form, exploring both application and subject matter. As Artmaroon, her practice, curatorial grounding and art facilitation is underpinned by a sense of un/belonging between three continents. Jean has a background in spatial design, and is co-founder of EARTHworks [Artists’] Collective, an intergenerational and collaboration-focused curatorial duo.
Debbie Golt is an award winning broadcaster and arts consultant with a successful track record reaching as far back as the Rock against Racism movement in the 1970s. Her starting point is African music, reggae and wider arts and culture. Under her ‘umbrella’ The Outerglobe, she hosts her regular show on Resonance FM radio. Debbie has also guested on other radio stations, and in female-led DJ takeovers and collaborations, such as Vinyl Sisters. As a music consultant she has worked with a formidable roll call of international artists and partnerships.
Gaynor Tutani (Art Adlib) integrates her passions for arts, culture, community and education into exhibitions, events and art commentary, with a specialism in public programming. She has hosted live performances, talks, interviews and poetry – most notably aligning programming within the core values and vision of community engagement as a Curator and Producer at Museum of the Home. Gaynor is the other half of EARTHworks [Artists’] Collective. She holds a BA in History and the History of Ideas and an MA in Museum Cultures with Curating, specialising in de-colonial approaches.
Wil Joseph-Loewenthal writes flash fiction, short stories and poetry. She is completing an MA in Creative Writing at Roehampton University, where she was recently published in The Rook, an anthology of stories and poems. Her background is in World Music. For several years, she was the Education Officer for an organisation that toured African and Caribbean artists around the U.K. Wil also recently published in Black Grief and Healing an anthology of stories, essays and poems from the Black community regarding cultural aspects of grief and bereavement.
