Jobs, skills and training systems can’t keep pace with AI and emerging technologies. This project explores how people and communities are experiencing these changes – and what they mean for progression and opportunity.

This work combines two complementary strands: in-house research and Fellow-led inquiry.

The second strand is being led in partnership with two Fellow-run organisations, Treehouse Consultancy and Bathwick Group, placing Fellows’ insight, lived experience and leadership at the heart of the project. Alongside this, we are exploring how AI and emerging technologies will shape jobs, skills and progression for local communities, including through our Social Value Commission work with Thames Freeport.

Read our blog for a deeper look at the motivations behind the project and an outline of the plan in more detail.

Why does this matter?

  • We need clarity on which tasks AI is affecting right now, and how.
  • We need to understand which tasks are likely to be affected in the future.
  • We need to identify the new skills required to navigate this transition and create new opportunities for progression.

The key questions shaping our work on AI, jobs and skills

Not a Fellow?

Being a Fellow means contributing to research that shapes real-world change.

  • How is AI already changing your day-to-day tasks or workflows?
  • Which skills are becoming more important in your role or sector?
  • Where is AI creating challenges, pressure or unexpected opportunities?
  • What training, tools or support are emerging in your organisation?

By contributing, you’ll help shape research that:

  • Builds a robust understanding of AI’s impact on tasks, jobs and skills.
  • Supports inclusive training programmes for those often left behind (NEETs, SEND learners, older workers and career switchers).
  • Prepares people for future opportunities, not just today’s labour market.
