Join us as we reinvent and rework the Enlightenment Salon for the challenges of the 21st century!
A new project in the RSA’s Action and Research Centre is gathering views on how to bolster retirement security for the self-employed. The number of people who work for themselves has grown by 40 percent since 2000, and close to half of all jobs growth since 2008 is owed to people starting up in business.
Previous RSA research has shown that few of the self-employed are saving into a private pension. Just 23 percent make contributions to a scheme compared with 61 percent of employees.
Several solutions to this pension shortfall have been put forward. One is to create a form of assisted enrolment that would nudge the self-employed to opt into a scheme at the point they complete their tax return. Another idea is to ask the self-employed to pay a higher rate of Class 4 National Insurance, which would be immediately channelled into a private pension of their choosing.
With support from the online marketplace Etsy, the RSA is looking to crowdsource innovative ideas from Fellows to complement those already being discussed. We will host a special event in the South East region for self-employed Fellows and experts in pensions, finance, design, and technology to debate the best way of solving this emerging crisis.
Inspired by the salons and coffeehouses of the Enlightenment, we have developed this brand-new format in order to harness the power of civic discourse. This RSA Salon will use a combination of presentations, plenary debates and breakout sessions to carefully unpick the subject matter, allowing for audience participation but also providing significant stimulus material to fuel insightful conversations. This is a participatory event; everyone is welcome and warmly encouraged to contribute.
