The concept of a basic income paid to citizens - regardless of who they are - is gaining momentum. Trials across the globe provide an insight into how a basic income can help people both financially and in terms of their health and well-being.
A number of local authorities in Scotland – including Glasgow – are exploring how to set up basic income pilots so, is this an idea whose time has come? And could Scotland lead the way in seeking to protect its citizens in an increasingly insecure world?
GCVS and RSA Scotland are jointly hosting a thought provoking event to consider basic income in Scotland. Through a number of influential speakers and debate, we will ask “Is Scotland ready for such a radical policy?” We will also consider how such a programme might benefit those families and communities supported by the third sector.Speakers include Head of RSA Scotland, Jamie Cooke, currently supporting Glasgow, Fife and North Ayrshire Councils to consider basic income and Annie Miller from the Citizens Basic Income Network in Scotland, who will launch her book, “A Basic Income Handbook”, at this event. Other key speakers still to be confirmed.
