RSA Fellows’ Borders & MCICH Network: Chinese Art and Ceramics in Europe

RSA Fellows and guests are invited to register for the MCICH & Borders Network: Chinese Art and Ceramics in Europe, supported by the Confucius Institute for Business & Communication, Heriot-Watt University, to whom grateful thanks are extended.

Our speaker is Kate Hunt, Director, Specialist Head of Sale, Chinese Ceramics and Works of Art at Christie's, London. Given that the Society relates to "Arts, Manufactures & Commerce" and has links to the RDI, it is envisaged elements of the illustrated presentation will include:

• The "art" of how ceramics are made vs how skills and vocational capacity were originally developed.
• How production and manufacturing skills were transferred over time.
• The development of some of the easily recognisable designs as also the less recognisable.
• Elements of the manufacturing process.
• The development of China-Europe commerce - in terms of historical trade and Christie's current "reach.
• All supported by a range of slides to provide an exhilaration via a visual cornucopia.

This will be a great opportunity to gain greater awareness of the skills and development of Chinese Ceramics and Art in line with Britain’s ceramics heritage. We will also look at the current market and current key European commercial markets, including private and public Collections.

As it was originally scheduled to run as part of the 2018 European Year of Culture and Heritage, this event represents a springtime cornucopia as a reminder of 2018EYCH.

Speaker Bio - Kate Hunt, Chinese Ceramics and Works of Art at Christie's, London:
Kate worked in London at Spink & Son 1995-2000, after which she worked freelance for twelve years before joining Christies in 2012.   When freelance, she workedwas a journalist, writing on a wide range of art-related subjects for many magazines including Artnet.com, Art & Auction, Antique Collecting and Orientations. For many years, she was also a weekly contributer for the Antiques Trade Gazette focussing on features and auction reports for the Asian art market. She has thus a link to the "Commerce" in the RSA's full name.
