RSA Norwich and Norfolk: The Future of Palliative Care

Why Norfolk, Why Now?

In Norfolk, by 2021 25% of the population will be over 65 years old. It is estimated that by 2040, 75% of patients will benefit from palliative care. This presents both challenges and opportunities. There are challenges for statutory services to address demand, workforce and workload concerns, and significant opportunities to expand community involvement in supporting others with life-limiting illness, loss and bereavement.

About the Event

FILMS: This knowledge and skills exchange meeting will be led by Guy Peryer, Lecturer in Applied Health Sciences at UEA, and RSA Fellow. To spark discussion, the evening will begin with the screening of two films, including BFI documentary Holding Space. The filmmaker Rebecca Kenyon will be in attendance to answer any questions.

DISCUSSION: The short films will be followed by an in-depth discussion on a number of pressing issues facing Norfolk:

• What is your understanding of palliative care? It may be one of the most misunderstood phrases in health and care.

• How can we get better at talking about it and dispelling some of the fear that is attached to it?

• Creating a Compassionate Community in Norfolk: How can we move forward with a public health approach to palliative and end of life care in the Norfolk community?

At this event we hope to build on the successful meeting held at UEA in May 2019, where similar topics were discussed, including the compassionate care approach.

We will discuss Compassionate Communities, which have been written about extensively by Allan Kellehear. The positive action they have taken to encourage community support for long-term caregiving, loss and grief is described here (click the links in the left-hand panel). Various locations around the UK have adopted the Compassionate Charter. Plymouth was the first place in the UK to adopt the charter.

The meeting will be in the NEAT suite which is marked on the handmade map (it is in building H1 on the campus map next to P5 which is the nearest car park). #25 bus stop is also marked (#26 bus also comes to the campus but it heads onto the hospital so passengers will need to walk from the main car park).
